The Old Village windmill
This is a once-in-a-lifetime, probably never to be repeated opportunity to buy a piece of Alonissos' history and you can be sure that the first serious buyer to view will buy.
The windmill was built in 1850, the stone being excavated from a local mountain. The windmill was bought by the owner in 1970 on the basis that the sitting tenants (goats, donkeys and chickens) would be evicted! He then proceeded to lovingly restore the windmill, bringing the first floor beams from a windmill on Mykonos, creating "niches" in the walls adding character and painting the walls white, but leaving stonework exposed. He has converted it into a comfortable residence which he has actually lived in, in the past, and which can be used as a unique holiday home with extraordinary appeal, a rental investment or as a museum possibility.
The windmill is a widely-recognised symbol of the Old Village - in fact, I nearly used it as part of the Logo for this website.
The windmill is being sold as a furnished residence but is also absolutely packed full of antique objects, most of which are available to the buyer as a separate negotiation.
The windmill is situated in the centre of the Old Village next to Aloni (Panioti's) Taverna and close to the supermarket and bus stop, with superb views.
The outer walls at ground floor level are more than a meter thick, reducing to 90cm at the top. The building is 5m in diameter (internally!) and its ground extends 1.2m around it.

The ground floor has been cleverly adapted to incorporate a kitchenette and shower room, both of which are concealed behind large wooden doors.
The kitchenette, with an arched ceiling, contains a sink and cupboard, the fridge and electric rings being in the main room. The electric rings are placed in a "niche" in the wall.
The shower room contains toilet and shower, with a small handbasin by the front door.
The living area, which has exposed wooden beams and plaka (stone) paved floor incorporates a built-in storage cupboard and contains a table and chairs and a bench seat.
From the ground floor, stone steps follow the curve of the building to the first floor with its two single beds, a wardrobe and a cupboard.
Stone steps lead from here to the second floor (3.25m diameter) with its stripped wooden floor, old beams, a double bed and curved wooden bench seat.
Wooden stairs lead to the third floor bedroom with concrete floor and ceiling, four windows with spectacular views in every direction and two single beds.
The windmill has an adequate sterna (supplemented by mains water if needed) and mains electricity. However, the owner has been considering replacing the sails. This would enable the windmill to generate its own electricity; it would also greatly enhance the building.
